To kick off our Summer Inspirational Blog Series I interviewed the lovely Claire Nicola King.
Meet the beautiful lady that will be the photographer of our summer 2012-2013 look book (coming soon!).
She is a true artist and I was inspired as she described a typical day in her life as a photographer and why
she’s in love with her passion to capture memories on film, you’ll be too...
Since being asked to write this article, I've been contemplating what my idea of a small business owner is. How their lives must look, and what I could possibly say to help inspire other people, who like me, are working twenty four hours around the clock to make a success out of their dream.
When I really think about it, the mental picture isn't too glamorous.
I generally think of myself as a full time workaholic, and a part time cat lady who when the sleep deprivation becomes dire, find myself saying insane things like "we (as in, the cat and I) are editing". What can I say, being twenty four and an almost-full-time photographer is attractive!!! But then I remembered, that when I pry myself free from the computer, and out of my pajama pants, I have the absolute honour of being the person who spends that first magical hour after a wedding ceremony with a newly married couple. I get to laugh with pregnant women while they attempt to bounce themselves into uncomfortable positions so that I can get a good shot of their precious bellies. I can offer support and kindness to a nervous bride before she puts on her dress, and assure her that all other brides feel the same nerves that she does before they walk down the aisle. I'm allowed to hold ten day old babies ... before I put their tiny naked bodies on a tiered cake stand. And most recently I was privileged enough to experience the once in a life time moment of a client of mine proposing during a couple shoot. I'm living the life that makes me the happiest, and meeting more incredible and loving people than I had ever thought it would be possible to encounter. Each and every day I'm amazed by who has come into my life through my photography, and I'm so grateful to the people who entrust their special moments to me. This being said, I'm proud to be young, self-employed, and respected by the people who are most dear to me. I am however also grateful for the sleepless nights, difficult clients and countless let down's, because I hope that people will find inspiration in the fact that things DON'T need to be going right all the time, to mean that they will go right in the long run. Having a moment, or an hour of weakness doesn't mean you aren't strong, it just shows means you are human. So long as you are working hard and working ethically, the rewards will be worth the sacrifices.
What inspires you and motivates you every day?
I would love to have a slightly less cheesy answer to this question, but I don’t, so I reckon I’ll just go with the truth. I love people, people are my passion. I’m often asked why I don’t branch out into product, wildlife or landscape photography. I think perhaps I’m just not inspired by those genres in the same way that I am by the life and love and personality in human beings. Our different sense of humour, and sometimes our vulnerability and shyness. The things we want people to see, and the things we think we hide so well. I’m constantly searching for those things in everyone I meet. It’s a challenge to me in each and every shoot I do, to be able to capture something of someone’s intangible personality in an image. I push myself to find the real person behind a face, and combine the two to produce what I feel to be an honest picture. It’s both my greatest reward when I get it right, and hair-pulling, bunny-boiling frustration when I don’t.
Why do you love your job, and what are the perks and pitfalls?
It’s easy to love my work.
In fact, I often rely on my job to remind me of the things I love most in life, and of the beauty and magic in a world where we are so often bombarded with the harsh realities that rob us of hope and joy. It’s sometimes strange and always a blessing to realise that my profession is to accompany people on the happiest moments of their lives and to document it. However, as with all industries, there are challenges to deal with. Clients are human, and not all humans are destined to get along and see eye to eye. I’ve had to learn over quite a number of years, where to let the client be right, and where to put my foot down. Luckily, by offering a variety of services such as maternity, wedding, fashion, newborn and family photography, I'm slowly starting to build up a group of people who trust me as well as my work and are kind enough to recommend me to their family and friends on a regular basis
Your must have style items for your spring summer wardrobe?
Oh dear, I don’t know if I’m qualified to answer this question! I wouldn’t consider myself to be a huge follower of the trends. I’m more of a classic girl. I believe that you can’t go wrong with having a few good basics in your wardrobe like some well fitted jeans that make your bum look better than it is, a classy black number for evening formal wear and a cute pair of pumps. I’m a sucker for pretty scarves and chiffon pussybow shirts though. A scarf is so versatile, and a good way to introduce a hint of the current trend to your outfit without breaking the bank. The pussybow shirts on the other hand are just a good old splurge… if you haven’t sat cradling your new purchase while wondering where you’ll find the money to pay next month’s rent at least once, then you…ok fine. You’re probably a well-balanced individual who knows how to budget.
What do you think of the Silk Orchid summer 2012/2013 collection?
The Silk Orchid Summer collection is exactly what I think tasteful and elegant women should be wearing. The designs are just so figure flattering and feminine! I've personally fallen in love with the Iris Black Peplum Dress ... since seeing it, when I daydream about success and celebrity status, I see myself wearing that!
Hmm… the beauty tip and I are well cquainted, but the application of said tips on a regular basis? Not so much. I’m still hoping sleep-soluble makeup might be invented within my lifetime… the existence of dry shampoo makes me hopeful! But seriously? I’m non-negotiable on sunscreen. I can’t fathom why women don’t protect their skin while they're young. Being golden brown in your 20s may be sexy, but having leathery skin and sun damage later in life certainly isn’t. Foresight, ladies!
